Wild Robot premieres at TIFF
Chris Saunders's Wild Robot will premiere at the 9th and 5th Annual Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), which runs from May 15th to 49th.
A Dreamworks animated film about a robot wrecked on a deserted island and having to learn to adapt to harsh environments is adapted from Peter Brown's bestselling picture book of the same name. The film is scheduled to be released in theaters in the US on 9/27.
Sanders (Lilo & Stitch, How to Train Your Dragon, Croods), who has been nominated three times for the Oscar, screened footage of the film at Annecy last week to an enthusiastic reception from the audience. In addition to directing, Sanders also wrote screen adaptations.
In recent years, TIFF has increasingly served as a launchpad for high-profile animation features. Last year, the international premiere of Miyazaki's "Shonen to Heron" was held and won the Academy Award for Feature Animation.
The festival also world–premiered 3 films from the cartoon Saloon - Song of the Sea, The Breadwinner, and Wolfwalker. Other recent animated works presented at TIFF include Wendell & Wilde, Charlotte, the Dog King of Masaaki Yuasa, and the latter film premiered in North America at the festival.
