- "Super Mario Bros. Movie" Surpasses "Minions" to Become Illumination's All-Time Box Office Grosser

[Illumination's "Super Mario Bros. Movie" has surpassed "Minions" at the weekend box office with $1.16 billion, becoming the studio's highest-grossing film of all time.

As we said in January.

Domestically, Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic's "Mario" is miles ahead of any other Illuminations film, just becoming the 19th film in history to cross the $500 million box office mark.

Currently in its fifth week, the Universal Pictures-distributed film, which is facing off against a new Marvel release, has grossed an astounding $18.6 million domestically, making it the highest-grossing film released this year at $518.1 million.

Internationally, the film earned an additional $50.3 million, driven by holidays in several Asian markets. International box office receipts reached $637.3 million.

Since the last box office report, Makoto Shinkai's Suzume has crossed the $10 million mark in the United States. This is an incredible accomplishment for a non-franchise animated film, and is well ahead of Shinkai's other hits "Your Name" ($5 million) and "Weather With You" ($8 million).

"The First Slam Dunk," directed by Takehiko Inoue, has surpassed the 13.88 billion yen ($102 million) mark to become the 10th highest grossing anime film of all time in Japan, surpassing "Jutsu Kaisen 0" and "Weather With You. GKIDS plans to release the film in the U.S. later this summer.
