Disney's Creation Oswald is the latest public domain character to get a horror spinoff

For those still keen to see the public domain mall and the classic cartoon star who hit the murder, the new project is a work featuring Walt Disney's first breakout character, Oswald Lucky Rabbit.

Follow in the footsteps of films like Winnie the Pooh's Blood and Honey, which scared off nearly5500 million at the global box office, and several new Mickey Mouse-themed projects that were teased last month, Oswald: Down The Rabbit Hole, will repurpose iconic characters from the horror genre.

The synopsis below the rabbit hole is:

Art and some of his close friends help track down his long-lost family lineage. When they find and explore the abandoned house of his great-grandfather Oswald, they encounter a magical TV that teleports them to a lost place in a time shrouded in dark Hollywood magic. The group discovers that they are not alone when they discover Oswald's lively cartoon rabbit, Art and his friends must work together to escape their magical prison before the rabbit gets to them first because their soul takes it.

Rabbit Hole Down was created by the filmmaker Lilton Stewart 3rd and will be produced by Lady of the Light Productions' Lucinda Bruce, who said they wanted to start filming this spring.

It's not yet clear how much animation will probably appear in the hybrid film, but a press release shows that the animation sequence will be produced by Los Angeles-based commercial studio Mana. Also attached to the project: Post-production studio Tandem Post House and vfx veteran Bob Homami, who serves as vfx supervisor.

Stewart and Bruce have a completed 142-page script and are also in the process of casting for the project while looking to finalize additional financial support.

In the release, Stewart explained that Rabbit Hole Down is part of the big trend of animated horror spin-offs, but he hopes to offer something new to this emerging genre:

The teaser trailer will give people a taste of a gruesome and nightmarish journey that takes the characters from the exciting adventures of finding themselves in what they wish to make it out of alive. It has always been my dream to make a new type of horror movie like never before. I think the audience will be surprised by the big difference between Oswald and other films in the spin-off horror space.
