Spain dominates in the 7th edition of the Quirino Awards
Spain was dominant in the 7th edition of the Ibero-American Animated Killino Awards presented at San Cristobal de la Laguna in Tenerife on Saturday. The work from Spain won 10 of the 5 awards presented.
The Spanish feature Robot Dreams, which has won several awards including Goya, the European Film Awards and the Annecy Contréchant, was nominated for an Academy Award, as well as the Best Animated Feature Award, the Sound Design Award and the Original Music Award. The film, directed by Pablo Berger, opened in New York on the 31st and expanded across the United States on the 6th.
The award for the animated series also went to the Spanish production: The musical Preschool series Jasmine & Jambo, directed by Silvia Cortez and produced by Barcelona-based Teidees Audiovisuals in co-production with Corporació Catalana de Mitjans Audiovisuals. The series won the same award at Quirinos last year for its first season. The series stars two characters with a passion for music, relates it to life and emotions, and explains the concept of music.
Lulina and The Moon, a 2d production from Brazil by Marcus Vinicius Vasconcelos and Alois Di Leo, won an award for short film. Direo previously won the Quirino in 2018 with his short Caminho dos Gigantes. Punkrobot Studios in Chile won the Commissioned Animation Award for "Among the Stars", a segment of the Disney + series Star Wars: The Vision.
The Honorary Award was awarded to Héctor and Liliana Cristiani, grandchildren and great-grandchildren of the Italian Argentine animator Quirino Cristiani.
The jury of this year's award was made up of Portuguese director José Miguel Ribeiro (Nayola), Colombian director Marcela Rincón (Lila's Book) and the United Kingdom. Director Wesley Lewis (UK) was joined by Latvian public television head Zane Valenis and Dandelooo co-founder and producer Emmanuel Petri. A total of 247 works were submitted for review.
