Disney Film "Wishes" Loses Over $130 Million, New Report Says
Disney's "Wishes" grossed nearly $255 million worldwide. However, for Disney, the film is a flop. [Disney may not release official figures, but a new report posted on Deadline shows an estimated net loss of $131 million.
According to the report, the film, directed by Chris Buck and Fawn Villa-Sansone, was Hollywood's fourth-largest economic loss in 2023; two of the three biggest bombings were also Disney films: Marvels ($237 million loss) and The Flash ( (a loss of $155 million), and Indiana Jones and the Doomed Dial (a loss of $143 million).
So how does a film with over $250 million in box office revenue end up in the red - by the report's calculations, Disney's share of box office revenue ended up at $106 million. Add to this $40 million in home entertainment revenue and $85 million in TV/streaming revenue, and the film's total revenue came to $231 million
.
However, the film cost approximately $200 million to produce, plus $100 million in P&A (print and advertising), $62 million in residuals, interest, and overhead, bringing total expenses to $362 million.
If there is a positive aspect to Wishes' performance, it is that it lost less money than its Disney Animation predecessor, Strange World.
Walt Disney Animation Studios' next film, Moana 2, is scheduled for release in November and will mark the first time Disney has produced a theatrical feature film between its Burbank studio and its new Vancouver studio. The new international production model should help keep production costs down.
