Puss in Boots" is on track to surpass its predecessor at the domestic box office.

Universal Pictures' "Puss in Boots: The Last Wish" continued its phenomenal weekend at the domestic and international theatrical box office.

With a domestic weekend gross of $10.6 million, down only 10% from the previous week, DreamWorks' Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is just $8.4 million behind its 2011 predecessor Puss in Boots, which grossed $149.2 million at the domestic box office. It is just $8.4 million behind its predecessor, "Puss in Boots. The Last Wish's domestic box office has reached $140.8 million after six weeks.

And despite its canceled release in 159 theaters and digital distribution, "The Last Wish" did so well that it held on to second place at the domestic box office behind "Avatar: A Watery Journey."

While "The Last Wish" is sure to overtake the first "Puss in Boots" film domestically this week, its current worldwide gross of $334.1 million is unlikely to catch up to its predecessor's $555 million, even though it is set to open in major markets like the UK and Japan. Globally, "PiB" fell out of the top five over the weekend despite grossing an impressive $30 million in its sixth week.

Chinese franchise "Boony Bears": "Guardian Code," the ninth film in the IP, grossed $43.7 million in its second weekend, bringing in $136.4 million in its first eight days. Despite being released only in China, the film ranked fifth at the worldwide box office over the weekend.

The striking-looking "Deep Sea" similarly ranked in the top 10 worldwide despite opening only in China, earning $21.5 million in three days and grossing $66.6 million in its first eight days.

While "Deep Sea" may have been more ambitious than the latest "Boony Bears" film, and appreciated for its charming aesthetic, it was not enough to overcome the power of a popular IP in Chinese cinemas. However, "Deep Sea" has caught the eye of the festival scene and will make its international debut in the Generation K Plus section of the Berlin International Film Festival next month.
