'Despicable Me 4' Trailer: First Look at the Return of Animation's Most Profitable Box Office Franchise

It's been seven years since a grown-up Gru and his friends graced the big screen, but the first trailer for Illumination's "Despicable Me 4," set for release July 3 from Universal Pictures, marks the return of animation's most popular villain.

In terms of theatrical box office, no animated franchise has made more money than Despicable Me. The film and the Minions spin-off combined have grossed $4.6 billion at the worldwide box office. The last feature film in the franchise, "Minions: The Rise of Gru," was one of the biggest commercial hits of 2022, grossing $934 million and becoming a #GentleMinions meme Few films on the 2024 theatrical release calendar are as certain as "DM4."

Illumination has yet to give many details about the film, but here's what we do know after this weekend's trailer release:
