Academy Award Nominee "Robot's Dream" Wins Best Animated Feature and Best Adapted Screenplay at Spain's Goya Awards

The Goya Awards, the Spanish equivalent of the Oscars, were held over the weekend, and Pablo Berger's "Robot's Dream" won Best Animated Feature and Best Adapted Screenplay.

The dialogue-free adaptation of Sara Vallon's graphic novel of the same name was also nominated for best original music and best editing. This is in contrast to the U.S. Academy's refusal to select animated films except in the category dedicated to animation.

This year, for example, the Critics Circle Awards nominated "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" for Best Visual Effects and Best Music, and nominated "Wish" and "Super Mario Brothers Movie" for Best Song. At the Golden Globes, animated films were nominated in the film, box office, scoring, and original song categories. On the other hand, no animated films were nominated in categories other than animated feature films and animated shorts.

The Best Adapted Screenplay win for "Robot Dreams" was a bit of a coup, as it was up against the Goya powerhouse "Society of the Snow," which won 12 awards, including Best Special Effects and Best Picture. The Special Effects Award went to Pau Costa, Felix Berges, and Laura Pedro, who worked on the film directed by J.A. Bayona.

The 2024 Best Animated Short Award went to Martín Romero's "To Bird or Not to Bird," which he often collaborated with Alberto Vázquez. Produced by Chelo Loureiro and longtime Vazquez producer Iván Minambres, the film impressed at the 2023 Cannes Animation Days.

The winners of the 2024 Spanish Academy Goya Awards in the animation and VFX categories are as follows.
