Supported by "ONE PIECE" and "Slam Dunk," Toei will finish 2022 with the highest box-office performance in the company's history.
The one-two punch of "ONE PIECE FILM RED" and "The First Slam Dunk" brought Japanese studio Toei's total box office for 2022 to a company record of 32.56 billion yen (US$246.6 million).
This is more than the 17.98 billion yen (US$136.2 million at the current exchange rate) record set in 2009 when the company released two films: "One Piece: One Piece Strong World", the live-action feature film "Tsurugidake: A Chronicle of Stones" and the massive VFX-driven live-action film "Kamen Rider Decade These are "Kamen Rider Decade: All Riders vs. the Great Shocker" and "Samurai Sentai Shinkenger The Movie: War of Fate".
Director Goro Taniguchi's ONE PIECE FILM RED, the most commercially successful film in the franchise's long history, is about to close its theatrical run in Japan on January 29. The film opened theatrically in Japan on August 6 and has since grossed 19 billion yen ($147.8 million) with approximately 13.8 million people in attendance, a record for the Japanese market in 2022 and well ahead of the second-place film, Top Gun Maverick.
The film also brought in $35.5 million from markets outside Japan, including $12.8 million in North America.
"Slam Dunk," which opened on December 3, once again topped the Japanese box office last weekend, earning 8.28 billion yen (US$61.89 million) from 5.67 million people. The film directed by Takehiko Inoue also did well overseas, grossing $7.8 million in South Korea, $2.3 million in Taiwan, and $1.3 million in Hong Kong. Its worldwide box office has now reached $73.3M.
